Beechcraft T-34 Mentor

Beechcraft T-34 Mentor

Walter Beech originally developed the T-34 Mentor in 1948 as the Beechcraft Model 45, a general aviation trainer aircraft. At the time, the US Military had a surplus of trainers from WWII. The aircraft saw early military use in Japan, Spain, Turkey, and several South American countries. In 1953, the US Air Force selected the aircraft as its initial trainer to meet the needs of jet pilots, christening it the T-34. The US Air Force purchased 450 T-34As, and in 1954, the US Navy purchased 420 T-34Bs. Over 1,450 aircraft were manufactured in other countries for local use, including Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan and FMA of Argentina.

L-19 Bird Dog

L-19 Cessna Bird Dog

The L-19 Bird Dog was developed from the civilian Cessna 170. It was designed to satisfy the U.S Army’s need for a more rugged airplane that could serve as a liaison and observation aircraft following World War II. The name Bird Dog was chosen because the role of the airplane was to locate the enemy and fly overhead until artillery could make it to the enemy.

Production of the L-19 began in 1950 and the first L-19’s saw service during the Korean war. 1962 and later models of the L-19 were re-designated as O-1’s by the U.S Military and saw service during the Vietnam War.

Varga 2150A Kachina

Varga 2150A Kachina

In the 1950s, William J. Morrissey designed an airplane inspired by the trainer aircraft of WWII, featuring tandem seating and a center joystick. The aircraft construction rights were sold to Shinn Engineering Inc. and later to the Varga Aircraft Corporation in 1965. Based in Chandler Arizona, Varga christened the aircraft “Kachina,” named for the spirits of the local Hopi tribe. Varga’s model included a larger engine, generating 150hp. This gave the 2150A superior performance to competing two-seat aircraft of the era.
